The Belle of the Ball

The Desert Air Motel sign has had a few face lifts over the years. When we took ownership of the place in 2018, we knew the only option for the sign was to refurbish it back to the original 1960s sign. Fortunately, there is a photo from a postcard on the internet floating around that we located. Using this image, see below, we were able to get a template created of the lettering. In true DIY fashion, we painted the sign back to the original dark brown, white and red colors.

While installing neon lights as it would have been in 1960 would have been ideal, it was cost prohibitive. Instead, we recreated the neon path on the lettering with LED rope lights. The effect is similar and it lights up the town of Sanderson nicely! The sign is a beacon for neon sign hunters and we are humbled that they find our place a destination on their road trip travels. We are doing our best to preserve the history and charm of this roadside motel and small Texas town.
