Return to Sanderson! Its been too long...

My last trip out to Sanderson was at the beginning of Spring Break with my son and one of his friends. It was when we were out there we started hearing the news of schools extending the break due to COVID, events being canceled, and areas starting to lockdown. At the time it did not register how weird things were gonna get. As everyone knows, things got weirder and weirdest, but here we are two and a half months later. We have been fortunate that our family and friends have remained healthy, and we hope the same for you.

When Stephanie (our manager) called a little over a week ago and mentioned the apartment was having a hard time cooling, we decided it was time to pull the trigger and get her a Central AC (something we’ve been meaning to do for a bit). Ensuring Stephanie’s comfort was the perfect reason to make our return to the big city! I mobilized my construction friends in Austin and the family and I all headed to Sanderson for the weekend.

On Friday afternoon my kids helped me remove some leaky roof fixtures on the bus and replace them with sheet metal.

Sara was having a craving for our favorite west TX BBQ, so that evening we made the drive to Marathon and got us some Brick Vault. We grabbed it to go and ate it in social isolation at a rest stop about halfway back to Sanderson.

That night, my cousin and his family arrived for their maiden trip to Sanderson. The next morning we hiked Hominy Hill with them. Their daughter loved playing with the giant millipedes.

Saturday afternoon, we went on a sotol harvesting run. Check out this bounty!

That night I caught this cool picture of a semi-truck under our sign.

We left early Sunday morning to head back to Austin. It was a quick trip, but productive. Most importantly we were able to reconnect with some of our good friends in the town. Can’t wait to get back! Hopefully in a few weeks to continue work on the backyard and bus. Stay tuned…
